Third Floor Soul is a powerhouse funk and soul band known for their vibrant energy, punchy horn lines, and infectious grooves. Directed by saxophonist and arranger Ben Baldwin, the band has been making waves across West Yorkshire and beyond since forming in 2021. With a dynamic lineup of talented musicians, Third Floor Soul brings a fresh take on classic soul and funk, blending old-school influences with a modern edge that keeps audiences dancing from start to finish. As one audience member put it, “We danced our socks off — every song nailed it.”
The band’s gig history speaks for itself, with standout performances at top venues including the Picturedrome in Holmfirth (September 2022 and New Year’s Eve 2024), Band on the Wall in Manchester, and The Parish in Huddersfield. Their festival appearances include back-to-back sets at Holmfirth Folk Festival (2023 & 2024) and they’ll be making their debut at Bands in the Barn 2025. They’ve also supported for a number of exciting acts including DeadBeat Brass, Dead Wax, and Ask My Bull.
At the heart of Third Floor Soul is a tight-knit team of talented musicians, each bringing their own flair and musical background to the mix. The band was co-founded in 2021 by Ben Baldwin (director and saxophonist), Anna Richardson (trumpet), Isaac Judd (guitar), and Jake Johnstone (bass), forming the core of a group that thrives on collaboration and creativity. Joined by charismatic frontman Sam Roberts on vocals, groove-master Diego Villarreal on drums, and Lucas Kelly on keys, the band blends expertise across jazz, funk, soul, and pop. Together, they create powerful original music, unique arrangements, and vibrant covers that showcase the full force of their collective sound, they’ve even been praised as having the “No.1 brass section in England.”.
Beyond live performances, Third Floor Soul is actively collaborating with emerging artists such as Bea Badilla, combining their signature horn-driven sound with new voices and fresh creative projects. The band is currently working on original material, with plans to record and release their debut EP in summer 2026. With performances described as “quite simply brilliant” and “a triumph,” and a reputation for shows that “smashed it so far out of the park it’s not real,”.
